Hood by Air showcases hip-hop as a fashion statement at Pitti 2015-2016 Autumn/Winter

Jan 20, 2015

On January 14th, New York luxury streetwear brand HOOD BY AIR presented its 2015-16 Fall/Winter collection in Florence. The designer was invited as a guest designer at the 87th Pitti Immagine Uomo, held from January 13th to 16th, and this season, the brand has established a new company in Italy. The collection featured entirely made-in-Italy pieces.

The collection kicked off with a hooded coat, and remained free of the brand's signature HBA logo and graphic patterns throughout. The standard dress code of coat, shirt, and jacket was deconstructed and reconstructed in an abstract hip-hop style. The collection continued with a genderless style that could be seen as a response to men's fashion interpreted from New York club culture. The materials, including wool, leather, kid mohair, piqué, and shearling, are a testament to Italian craftsmanship. The collection showcases a unique sexiness made up of components, such as high-heeled sneakers and apron-like coats. Like the track-making of Flying Lotus, the collection mixes previously unseen techniques and styles. Elements of street casual and sportswear, such as hoods, zippers, fur, and tape, blend together to create a grand operatic impression of EDM, hip-hop, jazz, anime, and video games. Designer Shayne Oliver, just 25 years old, made his debut in 2007 with a single T-shirt. He participated in the New York Collection in 2012 and won the LVMH Young Fashion Designer Special Award in 2014. Marcelo Burlon presented his collection at Pitti Uomo last January as an invited designer. During the last festival in June, rapper Kanye West was invited as a guest to a party hosted by Ermanno Scerbino in a fortress overlooking Florence, and the close relationship between Italy's most famous Classico festival and the celebrities born from club culture suggests a new era.
