Actress Tilda Swinton and Olivier Saillard, director of the Palais Galliera fashion museum in Paris, performed the improvisational play "Cloakroom" at the Teatro d'Estilo d'Omnibus in Florence on January 15th as a special program for Pitti Immagine Uomo 87. The pair's performance garnered acclaim at the Festival d'Automne Paris in 2012 and 2013, and a new program was created specifically for Pitti this time.
The stage set consisted of a long table, likely intended to represent a cloakroom, and a clothes rack. Tilda greeted the audience at the cloakroom desk, where they could leave their belongings. The simple setup involved lining up at the cloakroom without prior notice before the show. Tilda accepted the guests' shawls, jackets, coats, and other items, and after handing them a slip of paper, confronted each item. At one point, she lies face down on the desk with her scarf in front of her, covers her head with the hood of her coat, crawls under the desk and presses her cheek against the sleeve of a jacket that has slipped off the table, kisses, and offers flowers. These silent actions seem to communicate with the customer or the item, but they also seem to signal some kind of connection between people and objects. Tilda Swinton's stunning expressiveness, performed silently for 80 minutes in a simple situation without giving the audience a moment to breathe, and the production, set against the backdrop of Olivier Saillard's fashion history, was met with thunderous applause in Florence. Following her appearance as a model for Mercedes-Benz's global key visual last October, Tilda visited Japan as a special guest at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo. In 2011, she also visited Japan for the campaign for the film "Milano," which featured costumes by Raf Simons. Known for his knowledge of Japan, there are high hopes that the sequel to "Cloakroom" will also be performed in Japan.
As an aside, in the program for the first two performances in Florence, a Japanese journalist left his tie in the cloakroom, to which Tilda responded by leaving a kiss mark on a piece of paper. After the performance, the tie was returned to the journalist with a message on the kiss mark, and he was congratulated by Pitti officials as "the MVP of this year."
