Lexus Design Award winners announced, including a mask that lets you experience animal powers

Jan 30, 2015

The winners of the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2015, an international design competition aimed at discovering the next generation of creators, have been announced.

The award, which called for designs based on the theme of "The Five Senses," received 1,171 submissions from 72 countries. The judging panel in November last year selected 12 winners.

Prototypes of some of these works will be exhibited at the LEXUS venue at Milan Design Week 2015, one of the world's largest design exhibitions, to be held in Milan, Italy in April. To help create these prototypes, each winner was assigned a mentor. They provided advice on their work: architect Arthur Huang, game designer Robin Hunicke, architect and designer Neri&Hu, and designer Max Lamb.

A total of four designs advanced to the final round. "ANIMAL MASKS," designed by Keita Ebitsuka, allows visitors to experience the high-altitude perspective of a giraffe and the echolocation of a dolphin through a mask-shaped interface. "ANIMAL MASKS," a mobile created by a mixed group of Japanese and Italians, generates electricity and emits light through flapping wings. Other works selected were uniquely conceived, including "LUZ," a lighting system that changes with the weather, and "Sense-Wear," a garment that heightens various senses when worn. The exhibition will run from April 13th to 19th at Milan Design Week 2015. Winners will give presentations at the venue. The Grand Prize winner will be determined by a final judging panel. Other winning works will also be exhibited at Milan Design Week 2015. Exhibits include a "crosswalk incorporating arrows," a "window-shaped heater that provides the warmth of sunlight," and a "stamp that changes font depending on the pressure and number of times it is pressed." Details of the winning entries and the judging session will be published on the official LEXUS DESIGN AWARD website.
