Cute yet surreal! Artist Higuchi Yuko's "Gustave" debuts at Shinjuku Isetan

Jan 22, 2015

Artist Higuchi Yuko is launching her own original brand, "GUSTAVE higuchiyuko," focusing on lifestyle goods. To coincide with this, a pop-up shop will be open from January 21st to February 3rd at Center Park/TOKYO Kaihoku on the second floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku, where all items will be sold in advance. The shop, titled "GUSTAVE higuchiyuko LABO - Higuchi Yuko's Strange Fantasy House," will sell interior and lifestyle items featuring cute yet surreal designs of plants and animals, as well as girls. Higuchi Yuko's delicate depictions of plants and animals are known for their venomous quality. Items on sale include Kutani ware plates (¥4,200 each) featuring surreal cats that complete a story when collected in five different styles, Imabari towel handkerchiefs (¥1,000) and bath towels (¥7,800), postcards (¥700) featuring illustrations of "dark cats" holding drums and demon clubs, antique-finished cardboard boxes (¥5,800), cotton lampshades (¥20,000), and accessories (starting at ¥18,000) created in collaboration between the brand and DECO vienya. The shop also sells works by bear artist Masayo Imai and stuffed animal artist Kyoko Umezu. The shop window also features a reproduction of "Atelier," a photo story directed by Higuchi and bear artist Masayo Imai for the fashion photo book "Palm Maison Vol. 12."
