Salon du Chocolat Ambassador Ayako Kawahara's daily routine: "Eat a piece of chocolate when you wake up" [INTERVIEW]

Jan 23, 2015

The 13th Japanese edition of Salon du Chocolat opened on January 21st. Ahead of the event, model and actress Ayako Kawahara appeared at the press preview the day before. While an avowed chocolate lover, her first encounter with chocolate dates back to the 1990s, when she was based in Paris. --What made you become a chocolate fan? I moved to Paris alone in 1991 to pursue my dream of becoming a model. However, I didn't have a strong desire to visit France, nor was I fluent in the language, so living in an unfamiliar place was a bit lonely. Then, one day, I learned that chocolate is a national favorite in France, so I bought one to try. I was surprised, however, to discover that chocolate made by skilled pastry chefs is quite expensive (laughs). Once I tried it, I was captivated by its mysterious charm.

As the gentle sweetness unravels in my mouth, I feel as if the tension and stress that has gripped my mind is also being released. Since then, sampling the flavors of various shops has become one of my favorite things to do. I often try the 500g assortment boxes. They are very luxurious, combining chocolates with nuts and dried fruits. Before I knew it, each piece had become an important part of my life, bringing me peace of mind.

For the past three years or so, I've been hooked on having a single chocolate when I wake up. It's a personal obsession (laughs). The flavor varies depending on the day, but I like the types made with almonds or pistachios. I also love orange peel. Chocolate helps balance blood sugar levels, so it's great for waking up refreshed.

--At the opening ceremony, when asked about your favorite chocolate, you answered "Jean-Paul Hévin."

Yes. The first chocolate I tried after moving to France was from Hévin. So when I met Evan, who is participating in Salon du Chocolat today, my crazy fan mentality kicked in and I was so excited. After telling him, "I love the chocolates you make!", I added, "My heart is beating so fast I can't put my feelings into words" (laughs). I was filled with nostalgia as I remembered my frequent visits, and meeting him made me feel even closer to Evan's chocolates.

--Aside from a piece of chocolate a day, is there anything else that nurtures your beauty?

My family. Nothing brings me more peace than spending time with my husband and my dog. I also value exercise time. After injuring my left knee during modeling work, I started seeing a personal trainer about three years ago. By exercising and building my strength, I feel like my flexibility has improved, and my everyday movements are now more supple.

--You've further refined your skills, and we can look forward to seeing even more success in the future.

For the past three years or so, I have been focusing on my private life, but this year I have decided to return to acting. I am looking forward to meeting you all on screen soon. In order to be able to produce satisfactory results as an actor, I would like to continue my habit of eating chocolate when I wake up and stay beautiful in both body and mind.
