Want to try this on Valentine's Day? Sweet-smelling fashion show at Salon du Chocolat

Jan 21, 2015

At the press preview for Salon du Chocolat 2015, held at the Shinjuku NS Building on January 20th, a chocolate fashion show was held in cooperation with the Vantan Group, which owns a fashion and chocolate pastry school. This fashion show is held annually in France, the home of Salon du Chocolat, but this is the first time it has been held in Japan. A total of 10 figures were unveiled this time. Four of them are a collaboration between Izumi Koichi, owner pastry chef of ASTERISQUE, and Harimoto Suzuji, designer of REIJI HARIMOTO, and have a "mode" theme. Additionally, three collaborative fashion pieces were created by Dalloyau Japan chef pastry chef Kenta Nakano and stylist Yuka Komatsu, with the theme "Tokyo Pop Fantasy." The remaining three pieces were created by L'Ecole Vantan pastry chef Yukihiro Nabeta and designer B.Yavuutsagaan. (Yawo), with the theme "Elegant & Japonism." Regarding this collaboration, the Izumi x Harimoto pair are clearly in love with each other, praising each other's talents. Harimoto couldn't help but express surprise, saying, "Izumi was able to see into my creative intentions, even those in my industry that don't." Izumi, who enjoys window shopping at apparel stores, said the first thing he considered when creating the pieces was, "I thought I'd win if I could make the audience think, 'Wow, these clothes are made of chocolate!'" He revealed that he aimed for a look that would create the illusion that the clothes were one with the chocolate. In fact, the light fabrics used by Haramoto and the delicate, dynamic chocolates created by Izumi were a perfect match. The pieces swayed softly as the models walked, creating a striking effect. Nakano and Komatsu, on the other hand, shared a common vision by focusing on the keyword "POP." Komatsu said, "I wanted to create a dreamy worldview by utilizing the essence of Dalloyau," and Nakano responded by creating an elaborate headpiece out of chocolate and candy. The haori (jacket) draped over the pieces with colorful macarons also made a big impact, giving the audience the illusion of peeking into a scene from a fairy tale. Finally, the Nabeta and Yawo pair focused on faithfully recreating the designer's vision. "I imagined the perfect outfit a girl would want to wear on a Valentine's Day date. I love orange, so I'm happy that I was able to create a piece that really highlights that color," Yawo said with a smile. Nabeta's masterful techniques resulted in a cute look that would brighten even the coldest winter weather. The girly world created by the three-dimensional, vibrantly colored outfits drew passionate sighs from the audience. "Our pair emphasized cuteness by emphasizing femininity, but I think everyone will enjoy the unique charms of each of our three partners. I hope that through this show, more people will become interested in chocolate and fashion," Nabeta said. As the festival continues to grow at a pace that surpasses the original, opportunities to see their creations will surely increase.
