
Contemporary artist Takashi Murakami was born on February 1, 1962, in Tokyo. He is known as the creator of the contemporary art movement "Superflat."
In 1991, while studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School, he held the solo exhibition "TAKASHI, TAMIYA," marking his debut as a contemporary artist. He completed his doctoral studies at the same university's Graduate School of Fine Arts in 1993. Renowned for his work that explores subcultures such as anime and figurines, Murakami has received international acclaim, having held solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Palace of Versailles, and the Samsung Plateau Museum of Art in Seoul.
He runs Kaikai Kiki, an art production and management company whose artists include Chiho Aoshima, Aya Takano, Mr., and Obi. Since 2002, he has also organized the participatory art fair "GEISAI," held annually in Japan and Taiwan. In 2012, he made his directorial debut with the film "Jellyfish Eyes," and in 2013 he opened his own cafe, "Bar Zingaro," in Nakano Broadway, and is active in a wide range of fields.
In 2003, he made waves with his collaboration with Louis Vuitton, and last year he released a Shu Uemura Christmas collection based on "6HP," an all-CG animation film he directed.
