[New York LINE] Nipponista interviewed Japanese brands that showcase delicate craftsmanship on location

Feb 17, 2014

Nipponista had a pop-up shop in New York until February 13th. How have Japan's fine products and people been received overseas?

This time, we report on comments received locally at SOMARTA, the designer Tamae Hirokawa's brand known for its delicate craftsmanship, and Maison des Perles, run by embroidery artist Moko Kobayashi.

SOMARTA gained international recognition after being worn by Lady Gaga, but had never been sold in New York until now. Many people stopped to stare at the striking bodysuits. The designs, carefully designed to complement the body and pattern, are knitted using pre-programmed data on seamless knitting machines. This body knit series is truly a masterpiece perfected by Japanese designers using Japanese technology. And, at the Nipponista shop, where customers could try on the items, many customers apparently made purchases.

Everyone also paid rapt attention to Kobayashi Moko, who creates pop motifs such as giraffes and octopuses by hand-embroidering tiny beads. She has had repeat customers who have seen her demonstrations at the pop-up shop many times, as well as interviews with local bloggers. She's even been approached about several business deals!

If even one more person can experience the skills of these creators on the streets of New York, it would make me happier.

Next time, I'd like to report on the food-related party.
See you next time!
