[New York LINE] Nipponista asks New Yorkers about Aomori indigo

Feb 13, 2014

The Nipponista team, which operates a pop-up shop in New York to promote the quality of Japanese products and people to the world, shared their reactions to introducing Aomori Indigo to New Yorkers on LINE!

Aomori indigo dyeing may still be relatively unknown even within Japan. This is because, in snowy Aomori, the period during which indigo plants can be buried in the soil and fermented is limited, making mass production difficult.

To promote indigo dyeing, which uses traditional Japanese techniques, Nipponista asked Japanese designers, including White Mountaineering, N Hollywood, and Mihara Yasuhiro, to create items using Aomori indigo dye.

When visitors were shown photos of the indigo-making process, they were intrigued by the color created from green indigo leaves. Those who held Aomori Indigo in their hands were often met with the word "beautiful."

A video explaining the background to the creation of Aomori Ai and messages from the designers who participated in this project is now available on the official Nipponista website.

See you next time!
