Paper cutting artist Riya's solo exhibition "TRICK STER" will open on February 14th at Gallery Speak For in Daikanyama, Tokyo.
This exhibition is planned as a traveling exhibition following her well-received solo exhibition in Osaka last fall. True to her name, "trickster," meaning "a mischievous character who disrupts order and disrupts stories in mythology," the exhibition aims to guide viewers on a journey to another world by borrowing the perspectives of troublemakers such as ravens, coyotes, and rabbits. In addition to more than 10 new works from the Osaka exhibition, the exhibition will also feature approximately 40 original drawings and giclee works for sale. Related merchandise such as T-shirts, bags, and mugs will also be available.
Riya was born in Chicago, USA in 1985. She studied textile design at Tama Art University and began creating paper cutting art in earnest in 2009 after graduating. She has done editorial work for magazines such as "VOGUE JAPAN," advertisements and wall designs for the Isetan Shinjuku store and the Ginza Sony Building, and has also designed collaborative items with the cosmetics brand "L'OCCITANE" and the apparel brand "KUMIKYOKU." The "Trickster" exhibition was held at Osaka DMO Arts in October last year.
