
Sanyo Shokai announced the trend in rain boot sales following the heavy snowfall.
The company reported that sales of rain boots for both men and women, under its Mackintosh Philosophy brand, increased significantly from February 10th to 16th. The company reported that customers bought rain boots en masse in preparation for the heavy snowfall.
Men's rain boot sales during the period increased approximately nine-fold from 48 units last year to 430 units this year. Made of PVC, the boots have a leather-like appearance. The sole and upper are molded as a single unit, eliminating the risk of water leakage. While rain boots are still relatively unfamiliar in the men's market, this year's heavy snowfall appears to have led to a sudden surge in their popularity.
Women's rain boot sales during the period increased more than 3.5 times compared to last year. Sales were particularly notable at stores in Tokyo. Furthermore, the company reported that there was a high demand for long rain boots, rather than the short ones that were popular during the rainy season.
