Diesel launches first solo exhibition in Japan by up-and-coming Brazilian artist

Feb 28, 2014

Brazilian street artist Stephan Doitschinoff's first solo exhibition in Japan, "JUREMA PRETA," has opened at the Diesel Art Gallery in Shibuya, Tokyo. It runs until May 23rd.
Born in Brazil in 1977, Doitschinoff is a self-taught artist who has become a leading figure in Brazil's young art scene. Known for his unique combination of Afro-Brazilian folklore and Baroque religious iconography, his work has been exhibited at museums in the United States, Brazil, and Europe, including the São Paulo Museum of Art. From 2005 to 2008, he garnered attention for his long-term project of painting an entire village in northeastern Brazil with Doitschinoff's signature artwork.
This exhibition features a wide range of media, including ceramic sculptures, paintings, woodblock prints, and silkscreen prints, with a focus on female figures known as "JUREMA PRETA" (Jurema Preta, or Black Jurema). The curation was done by GESTALTEN, a Berlin-based publishing house that continues to disseminate cutting-edge visual culture.

In addition to the exhibited works, Jurema Pretta's second monograph, "CRAS," which can be considered a sequel to her first monograph, "CALMA," released in 2008 and which has already sold out, will also be on sale during the event.
