A new cherry blossom viewing experience with fluttering goldfish: "Edo Sakura Renaissance & Night Cherry Blossom Party"

Feb 18, 2014

"Edo Sakura Renaissance & Night Cherry Blossom Festival," an exhibition by art aquarium producer Kimura Hidetomo, will be held at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall from March 7th to 30th.

Art Aquariums are artworks that combine spatial design, staging, and goldfish. An exhibition held at the same venue last summer attracted 500,000 visitors and became a hot topic. This time, producer Kimura is working on a new exhibition. Based on the theme of "cherry blossom viewing," the venue recreates a cherry blossom viewing event held at a kabuki actor's residence in Nihonbashi during the Edo period. Without using a single real cherry blossom, the exhibition will present a new cherry blossom viewing experience using traditional Japanese crafts such as kimonos, glasswork, and pottery.

Kimura's latest art aquarium, "Edo Sakurarium," will also be on display. This complex installation features a gigantic "Edo Kiriko Chandelier," approximately 2.5 meters tall and 4 meters in diameter, made from approximately 1,000 Edo Kiriko glasses, and "Sakurarium," a work depicting goldfish as cherry blossom petals dancing on the water's surface. Lighting effects further enhance the gorgeous yet fleeting beauty of fully bloomed cherry blossoms. During the exhibition, a "Night Cherry Blossom Party" will be held every day from 7 PM, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the view while sipping a drink. A "Night Cherry Blossom Bar" will also be set up within the venue. Special live performances featuring a stellar lineup of contemporary and traditional artists are scheduled on weekends. Furthermore, for the first time, the long-established Kyoto confectionery shop "Oimatsu," the confectionery shop "Kamesuehiro," and the long-established tea shop "Fukujuen" have collaborated for the first time for this exhibition. A tea ceremony will be held in the "Wagashi no Ma" (Japanese Sweets Room) within the venue, and premium tickets, limited to 200 people per day, will be available for purchase (sales will begin in mid-February at 7-Eleven tickets nationwide).
