Actress Ingrid Bergman was born on August 29, 1915, in Stockholm, Sweden. She passed away on August 29, 1982.
She lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her aunt. At the age of 17, she auditioned for the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Her performance was well-received by the judges, and she won a scholarship to attend the Royal Dramatic Theatre's drama school.
She was discovered to have talent while still a student, but eventually dropped out of drama school. In 1934, she appeared in a minor role in the comedy film "Count Munkbrod." After making her film debut, she devoted herself to acting and appeared in numerous Swedish films. She moved to the United States when her film "Intermezzo" was remade in Hollywood, and she reprised her role in the remake. The remake of the film, A Separation, was released in 1939 and was a box office success, leading Bergman to relocate to Hollywood.
In 1942, Bergman starred in the romantic film Casablanca. She played Humphrey Bogart's lover, tormented by an unrequited love affair. The film was a huge success, winning three Academy Awards. This work became Bergman's signature work, and her name quickly became known across the United States.
Bergman continued to build a steady Hollywood career, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943). She also won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Gaslight (1944). However, behind the scenes, she felt dissatisfied with her own acting. Impressed by Roberto Rossellini's 1945 film Open City, she began sending fan letters, eager to appear in one of his films. She was later cast in the director's film, Stromboli, but her affair with Rossellini was discovered during filming (they were both married). After the film's release, Bergman married Rossellini and had a child with him. However, Bergman's decision to abandon her family and remarry Rossellini brought a flood of criticism from fans and critics. As a result, Strombo was a box office flop, and her honeymoon with Rossellini eventually came to an end. She was banished from the American film industry as a result of this scandal, but returned to Hollywood in 1956 with Pursuit, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She continued to appear in numerous films and television dramas, including Murder on the Orient Express (1974). After her divorce from Rossellini, she married theater promoter Lars Schmidt, but they divorced in 1975. She is also known for being a fan of Gucci's iconic Bamboo bag.
