Gucci will be holding a photo exhibition featuring kabuki actor Nakamura Kichiemon, "Nakamura Kichiemon Photo Exhibition - SONORAMENTE," in the Gucci Ginza 7th floor event space.
This exhibition was made possible by the shared belief of Nakamura Kichiemon and Gucci: "Respect tradition and pass on its splendor to the future." The title, "SONORAMENTE," means "resonantly" in Italian.
The works were taken by photographer Tokuyasu Nabeshima. The exhibit includes large-format photographs hanging from the ceiling, including images of Nakamura performing on stage, getting ready in the dressing room, and backstage shots. Nakamura, who enjoys painting as a hobby, will also be showcasing some of his own photographs with paintbrushes. All works are original prints made specifically for this exhibition using handmade "Ise Washi" paper from Daitoyo Washi Kogyo. The exhibition title was also created by calligrapher Shishu. Additionally, the venue will feature Nakamura's costumes and a special bag created as part of Gucci's support for traditional Japanese culture. In May 2012, Nakamura and Gucci co-hosted "A Night to Support Children in Tohoku," a charity gala event to support children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The event raised approximately 40 million yen in one night, all of which was donated to the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan's "Support for Children Affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, UNESCO Association School Support Scholarship Program." In July 2013, Gucci released a limited edition of its iconic "Bamboo Bag," made from Sendaihira silk, a traditional Edo-period silk fabric favored by Nakamura for hakama (traditional Japanese kimono). All proceeds from the sale were donated to support the recovery of the industry following the Great East Japan Earthquake. The two companies have collaborated to preserve traditional Japanese culture and support the children who will lead the future.
