Aug 29, 2014

A film festival celebrating French director François Truffaut, celebrating the 30th anniversary of his death, will be held at Kadokawa Cinema Yurakucho in Tokyo's Ginza district. The festival will run from October 11th to 31st, including the director's death anniversary on October 21st. A total of 23 films will be screened, from his debut short film "Longing" to his final work, "I Can't Wait for Sunday!" Jean-Pierre Leaud, who appeared in many of Truffaut's films, will be appearing on stage for a greeting on the opening day. A poster of "The 400 Blows" by Hisamitsu Noguchi and photographs of Truffaut will be on display in the theater lobby. Advance tickets, on sale August 30th, are available for ¥1,400 for a single ticket, ¥2,600 for a two-ticket ticket with an original eco bag, and ¥15,000 for an unlimited viewing pass.

The Marunouchi branch of H.P.FRANEC BIJOUX is coordinating jewelry inspired by scenes from the film, and the Kagurazaka branch of the long-established French bakery PAUL and other locations are selling related items such as the "François Truffaut Set" (1,000 yen), named after northeastern France. "Truffaut's Last Interview" (Heibonsha), by longtime friends Yamada Koichi and Hasumi Shigehiko, will be released at the end of September, and HD master Blu-ray versions of three of Truffaut's most famous films, "The 4000s," "Like a Fire," and "The Last Train" (4,800 yen each), will be released on October 10th.

Truffaut was born in 1932 on Rue Henri Monnier in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. After a turbulent youth that included serving time in a juvenile detention center for delinquency, volunteering for military service, and being admitted to a psychiatric hospital, he began writing articles for film magazines at the age of 20 under the guidance of André Bazin, who was in charge of the film section of the cultural labor organization "Labor and Culture." He won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Foreign Film for "The 400 Blows," and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for "American Night." He passed away at the age of 52.
