Bvlgari unveils the Octo Roma Blue Carillon Tourbillon at LVMH Watch Week 2022

Feb 9, 2022

For decades, watch complications have been governed by set rules and principles of extreme classicism. Bvlgari has always challenged these constraints. The new Octo Roma Bleu Carillon Tourbillon is expressed in a highly modern way, with two classic tourbillon complications and a striking mechanism.

Contemporary interpretations are an essential element of Bvlgari's creations and are reflected in the daily development of watchmaking. The new Octo Roma Bleu Carillon Tourbillon combines two classic complications, redefining watchmaking tradition with a modernist approach.

This watch is equipped with a highly graphic skeleton movement with blue bridges. The platinum case is surrounded by a blue titanium middle case. This watch is designed to enhance the reproduction and clarity of sound, key elements in creating a striking watch.

The three-hammer "Octo Roma Blue Carillon Tourbillon" manual-winding movement measures 35mm in diameter and 8.35mm thick. It is powered by the BVL428 caliber and consists of a total of 432 components, all of which are manufactured in-house. The case features a spacious design to maximize sound transmission, increasing the torque of the three-hammer mechanism and creating a powerful sound. The middle case, in particular, is designed to maximize sound propagation. The design is hollow to minimize the amount of metal between the inside and outside, and three openings corresponding to the three gongs allow the sound to resonate outward. To effectively transmit the sound, the gongs are fixed directly to the case body, and the titanium case construction ensures crystal-clear sound transmission. The back has also been hollowed out and a titanium grid refitted to allow the sound to resonate outwards while protecting the resonance zone.

The watch gongs are handcrafted in multiple steps. They are folded and shaped by hand, then annealed and strengthened at 900°C. They are then cleaned and placed in a 500°C oven to smooth the surface. This allows the metal to resonate with a clear tone. As with certain components of the striking mechanism, filing refines the resonating chords. A three-hammer carillon with three tones plays a melody: C for the hours, E-D-C for the quarter-minutes, and E for the minutes. The mechanism is activated by a pusher on the left side of the case middle. The movement is equipped with a single conventional barrel, ensuring a power reserve of at least 75 hours and keeping the movement running at full power. Meanwhile, the barrel spring, drilled directly into the bridge, ensures the sound mechanism functions reliably.

The BVL428 caliber's architecture, the cutouts on the bridges and the arrangement of its various components are original and contemporary, creating contrasts that highlight the beauty of the mechanism. The hammers, gongs, tourbillon cage and perforated surfaces alternate with polished stainless steel, while the elaborately crafted main plate and bridges are ALD-treated. The deep blue finish, achieved through high-tech carbon-based vacuum deposition, adds an elegant touch.

Limited to 30 pieces, this watch features a see-through sapphire crystal caseback, is water-resistant to 3 bar and is presented on a blue alligator leather strap with a platinum triple-blade folding clasp.
