Singer Madonna was born on August 16, 1958, in Michigan, USA. Her mother died of illness when she was five, and her father later remarried. She grew up in a complicated family. She took dance lessons from a young age, enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1975, and studied dance, but dropped out after one year. In July 1978, she headed to New York with just $35 in hand, dreaming of stardom. She subsequently recorded a demo tape while taking formal dance lessons, and was signed to Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers. Her debut single, "Everybody," released in 1982, immediately reached number three on the Billboard Dance Club chart. Her first album, "Burning Up," released in 1983, sold four million copies nationwide, and the single "Lucky Star" reached the Billboard Top 10. Madonna then released her second album, "Like a Virgin," in 1984. The album sold 20 million copies worldwide. The single, "Like a Virgin," also became a megahit, topping the US charts for six consecutive weeks, solidifying her status as the queen of pop. Around this time, she also began to favor provocative clothing, and her sexy stage performances made her a well-known sex symbol. Her fashion became popular among young women, and girls who imitated Madonna's style became known as "wannabes" and became a social phenomenon across the United States. Jean Paul Gaultier is known for designing many of her costumes for her numerous world tours. The cone bra (a corset with a cone-shaped bra) she wore during her 1996 tour was her most notable and impactful piece. It was also exhibited at Gaultier's major retrospective, "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk," held in London in April of this year. In 1992, she published the nude photo book "SEX" and attracted attention with her sexually themed album "Erotica." She subsequently released a series of albums, including "Bedtime Stories" and "Ray of Light." For "Frozen," a track from Ray of Light, she hired British filmmaker Chris Cunningham as director, creating a stunning scene featuring a witch-like dance and a crow transformation. These hits led to her becoming listed in the Guinness World Records as the "world's best-selling female recording artist." She has also won numerous music awards, including a Grammy Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. She also made a guest appearance in the 1985 film "Vision Quest." Following the release of her first starring role in "Madonna's Searching for Susan" in 1986, she has continued to appear in films. Her singing voice in the 1996 film "Evita" earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
In her personal life, she married actor Sean Penn in 1985, but divorced four years later. She married actor Guy Ritchie in 2000, but also divorced in 2008.
Madonna has also produced fashion brands, and in 2007 launched the collaborative collection "M by Madonna" with H&M. In 2010, she founded the fashion brand "Material Girl" with her daughter Lourdes. In 2014, she collaborated with Japanese beauty manufacturer MTG to launch the new brand "MDNA SKIN." One product in the lineup, the serum "MDNA SKIN The Serum," attracted attention for recreating a recipe that Madonna regularly uses. Recently, it has been reported that Madonna is engaged in a battle with fellow singer Lady Gaga over whether to perform at the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall ceremony to be held in Germany on November 9th. In the past, Madonna has caused a stir when she clashed with Gaga, who allegedly imitated her style and music.
