Photographer Naoki Ishikawa's "MAKALU" photo exhibition opens at the IMA Gallery in Roppongi, Tokyo, on August 20th. Ishikawa first summited Mount Everest at age 23 and returned in 2011. His work has spanned mountains over 8,000 meters, including the world's highest peak, Qomolangma, its neighbor, the fourth-highest peak, Lhotse, and the often-known "Spirit Mountain," Manaslu. This latest installment, "Makalu" (8,463 meters), marks the final chapter of his Himalayan series. Ishikawa brought a medium-format film camera to Makalu, the world's fifth-highest peak, to attempt extreme conditions. Exhibits at the exhibition include snow-capped mountains, glaciers, maps used during his expeditions, and a unique installation inspired by Makalu's peak, embodying the world Ishikawa has seen.
Ishikawa will hold a talk show from 8:00 PM on September 24th, and a workshop is also planned. IMA Books will carry Ishikawa's photo collection and the books he brought with him on his Himalayan expedition, as well as original goods such as key chains, postcards, and stuffed Yeti and yak toys.
Born in 1977, Ishikawa crossed the Arctic and Antarctic human-powered in 2000, and climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents in 2001. Since then, he has continued to take photographs on the themes of movement and travel.
