Genocide Morphing Art Exhibition to be held at Nanzuka in Hong Kong

Aug 4, 2014

Shuhei Yamada's first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, "X," is running until August 31st at Hong Kong art gallery AISHONANZUKA. The exhibition features motifs deeply connected to the forms of nation, power, and individuality. The exhibit features portraits of genocidal dictators from around the world and throughout history, created using morphing (averaging) techniques; three-dimensional works using flags that evoke fictional nations; a minimalist-style work made of steel pipes reminiscent of prisons; and paintings that evoke violence, armed force, and crowds. Yamada was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1974. His works were selected for the SICF exhibition at Aoyama Spiral in 2000 and the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists in 2003, and won the Gold Prize at GEISAI in 2010. He has held solo exhibitions not only in Tokyo but also in Taipei and New York, and was the only Japanese artist selected for the Focus section of the 2013 Armory Show, which was themed "America."
