"Memory of Clothes" exhibition featuring NIGO, ANREALAGE, and Theater Products to be held in Maebashi

Aug 27, 2014

The exhibition "Memories of Clothing - Whose Clothes Are My Clothes?" will open on October 10th at Arts Maebashi in Maebashi, Gunma.

This exhibition moves away from the framework of trends and consumption created by designers and the fashion industry, placing "dressing" in the context of relationships between individuals and others, and proposing a consideration of the various roles that clothing plays. It aims to provide an opportunity to reexamine the everyday act of "wearing clothes."

In "Thread and Fabric," by Junichi Arai, Kaoru Hirano, and the fashion brand "STORE," clothes that have been carefully crafted are then taken apart and rewoven into threads, retaining their original arrangement, for a further period of time. In "Memories of Clothing," photographer Miyako Ishiuchi sheds a light on the present on artifacts, while NIGO presents his own collection of vintage jeans and sukajan jackets, recreating clothes with a modern twist while recreating their finer details.

"The Myth of Being Yourself" will explore what it means to be yourself from the perspective of fashion snap pioneer Shoichi Aoki, while ANREALAGE will present new work that moves away from identity and explores the possibilities of clothing. THEATRE PRODUCTS will undertake a project in which wearers will share the process of making clothes, and FORM ON WORDS will interview individuals to create "clothes just for you." Through their involvement with various Maebashi residents, FORM ON WORDS will also produce uniforms for Arts Maebashi.

Related events will also be held, including talk programs by participating artists and designers such as Miyako Ishiuchi, and a fashion show by FORM ON WORDS.
