An absolute icon equipped with a new mechanical caliber, Bvlgari's new Serpenti Misteriosi represents a new feat of miniaturization, combining the Roman brand's jewellery and decorative excellence. To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Bvlgari's first secret watch, Bvlgari is unveiling four new Serpenti secret watches, recreating the iconic design from the 1950s and featuring hinged covers set with brilliant-cut or baguette-cut diamonds.

These new watches are equipped with a new mechanical movement, "Piccolissimo" (Italian for "tiny"), one of the world's smallest, entirely developed and produced in Le Sentier, home to Bvlgari's Manufacture. The BVL100 caliber is a revival of the tiny mechanical "motors" that were found in all women's watches until the early 1970s.

A new feat of miniaturization

The BVL100 caliber, which displays the hours and minutes and measures 12.30 mm in diameter and 2.50 mm thick, is housed in a special case within the head of the Serpenti. Drawing on the extensive experience gained from the Octo Finissimo watch, the Manufacture developed an extremely compact movement weighing just 1.30 grams. The barrel, measuring just 5.00 mm in diameter and 1.47 mm thick, and the mainspring, measuring 170 mm unwound, clearly demonstrate the miniaturization of the 102 components. To further enhance the movement's compact size, a white gold balance wheel is used. When the Serpenti Misteriosi's snake head is raised, it opens to reveal the watch. A bidirectional winding crown located on the middle case allows for manual winding and time setting. These two functions are achieved by a mechanism that utilizes opposing forces.
The launch of the Octo Finissimo in 2014 was a defining event in the history of Bvlgari watchmaking. Breaking records for seven consecutive years, the Octo Finissimo has mastered the ultra-thin movement and redefined the aesthetics of luxury sports watches with its distinctive, modern design codes.

Continuing to push the boundaries of ultra-thin mechanical watchmaking, Bvlgari has set a new milestone in the ultra-small category with the introduction of the Piccolissimo, Italian for "tiny." With this, Bvlgari celebrates the brand's first iconic Serpenti secret timepiece, which broke new ground in women's watches and returned to splendor with gold, diamonds, lacquer and hard stones.
Continuing its legacy from the first Serpenti watches, including a model created in 1962 at Rome's Cinecittà Studios for Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, Bvlgari has been reimagining the iconic serpent for decades. Rooted in many ancient civilizations, the serpent embodies a variety of symbolic values, including femininity, reincarnation, good fortune, sensuality and seduction, all of which are embodied in the new Serpenti Misteriosi.

The Story of Serpenti

The first Serpenti Secret Watches were launched in the late 1950s. Subsequent models featured bi- or tri-tone gold, or even stainless steel, showcasing Bvlgari's mastery of bold color combinations, exquisite craftsmanship, and unconventional materials. Dials ranged from square, round, rectangular, and octagonal, some evoking a snake's head. The Serpenti offered a rich source of creativity for Bvlgari, as scales were recreated in diamonds, polychrome enamel, and gemstones. In other models, the scales were playfully shaped, individually soldered to form an intricate gold mesh. The snake's head took on a variety of shapes, each set with diamonds in pavé, baguette, navette, brilliant, or marquise cuts, lending each style its own unique character.
Embracing the spirit of Bvlgari, the new Serpenti Misteriosi are magnificent, colorful timepieces that place emphasis on jewellery and exceptional decorative techniques. Numerous individual components are individually crafted, then decorated, gem-set and assembled – a true masterpiece of artisanal craftsmanship. Particular attention has been paid to the overall design of the precious metal structure that forms the bracelet and head, ensuring a comfortable and lightweight feel.

The exquisitely elegant lacquered models are hand-applied with a translucent lacquer that is repeatedly dried and crystallised. A hand-applied stripe pattern on the metal scales accentuates the unique brilliance of the decoration. The perfect marriage of Haute Horlogerie and High Jewellery is beautifully expressed in captivating yellow and white gold. A yellow gold double spiral bracelet set with brilliant-cut diamonds gracefully entwines the white gold head and tail, while the head is adorned with a flower set with round-cut diamonds, a striking detail on this sensual timepiece.

Gazing at the world with eyes of rubellite, emerald and diamond, the Serpenti Misteriosi breathe a new aura of exquisite elegance into precious time. Continuing the noble tradition of the Serpenti, which first appeared in the 1950s, this new creation expresses the quintessence of Bvlgari, the "Jeweler of Roman Time", combining exceptional craftsmanship and Swiss watchmaking expertise. To embody this magnificent model, it can be worn on either wrist, and the case housing the movement and diamond-studded dial, hidden within the snakehead, is designed to be easily removed and turned so that it can be seen on either wrist.
