"The Work of Hanamori Yasuji: Designing Hands, Editor-in-Chief's Eyes" will be held at the Setagaya Art Museum in Setagaya, Tokyo, from February 11 to April 9.
In September 1948, shortly after the end of the war, Hanamori Yasuji founded the lifestyle and home magazine "Utsukushii Kurashi no Techo" (later renamed "Kurashi no Techo"), of which he served as editor-in-chief. Based on the basics of clothing, food, and shelter, the magazine proposed a rich lifestyle through ingenuity and ideas in times of material scarcity. It also communicated messages for each era, such as conducting "product tests for everyday items" during the period of rapid economic growth. Involved in everything from research and writing to production and promotion, the magazine grew to a circulation of nearly one million copies over 30 years without any advertising.
The exhibition, organized into six chapters, traces Hanamori Yasuji's career, beginning with his student days. The book details Hanamori's work over the course of approximately 30 years as editor-in-chief of Kurashi no Techo, divided into four periods beginning immediately after the end of the war. It also focuses on the anti-war sentiment embodied in the "One-Sen-Five-Rin Flag" (the flag of the common people's lives), a message he repeatedly addressed to readers in his later years, and his daily thoughts toward people. The final chapter showcases Hanamori's sharp yet warm gaze as he focuses on a variety of randomly collected "objects."
In addition, with the full cooperation of Kurashi no Techo Publishing, the book will showcase selected pages from all back issues of Kurashi no Techo, from the first issue to issue 153, during which Hanamori served as editor-in-chief. The book will also feature original cover art, photographs, and block drawings that were used to create the magazine, as well as Hanamori's handwritten manuscripts and in-train advertisements.
In addition, related documentary photographs and book design work commissioned by external publishers will also be on display, making this an exhibition that provides a complete picture of Hanamori's work as an editor throughout his life, through a total of approximately 750 documents.
