California-based select shop "Chriots on Fire" launched "Makoto Kagoshima Ceramics," a book compiling the works of ceramic artist and artist Makoto Kagoshima, on February 7th at Morioka Shoten in Ginza, Tokyo.
Charriots on Fire is a select shop and gallery founded by owner Ritsuko Yagi. Five years ago, she first encountered Kagoshima pottery and fell in love at first sight. She immediately visited Kagoshima in Japan and decided to introduce his work at Chariots on Fire. Since 2013, solo exhibitions of Kagoshima's work have been held at the same venue.
The newly produced "Makoto Kagoshima Ceramics" compiles approximately 130 pieces selected from works commissioned from Kagoshima to date. Yagi handled all aspects of the book, from editing to design and publication, as part of Chariots on Fire's activities. The beautifully bound book seems to speak to you with every turn of the page, capturing the rich sensibility of Kagoshima.
For their launch in Japan, Yagi and Kagoshima were eager to open their store at Morioka Shoten, a bookstore that has been garnering attention since its May 2015 opening as a "bookstore selling one book." They received numerous requests from various quarters to sell their books at Morioka Shoten, and the timing seemed difficult, but an offer from owner Morioka Yoshiyuki made it a reality. Inside the store, a central table is filled with Kagoshima books and pottery, and calligraphy paper hangs from the ceiling.
The book is A4 size, full color, and priced at ¥4,000. It will be on sale in-store until February 12th. The Kagoshima pottery pieces on display will be sold by lottery, with applications accepted in-store.
On the first day of the opening, Yagi, Kagoshima, and Morioka were all in the store and could be seen enjoying time with customers. A talk show was also held in the evening of the same day. Kagoshima expressed his gratitude to each and every customer, commenting, "The publication of this book is entirely thanks to the support of Ritsuko (Yagi). I am truly happy that so many people have come to visit."
