NIGO® revives the spirit of Kenzo Takada in Paris after half a century [Kenzo Fall/Winter 2022]

Jan 28, 2022

KENZO, which announced the appointment of NIGO® as its new artistic director in September last year, held its Fall/Winter 2022 collection on January 23rd, the final day of Paris Fashion Week Men's.

The runway venue, Galerie Vivienne, was the site of Kenzo's first show in 1970 and where the shop "Jungle Jap" was located. The collection incorporates NIGO's signature Ivy League codes, including Takada Kenzo's original sketches from the time, jackets featuring floral motifs from his archives, and Prince of Wales check patterns. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese cultural crafts he works on through his own brand, Human Made, the 60 looks showcased for men and women reflected the theme of "real to wear." Through NIGO's 2022 luxury collection, NIGO's collection showcases Western and Japanese, subtly and practically, with items such as the iconic street fashion sukajan (souvenir bomber jacket) and stadium jacket, as well as red-glazed ceramics, samue (workwear), and Japanese denim.

The front row of the show featured a stellar lineup of hip-hop stars, including NIGO®'s close friend Pharrell Williams, Tyler, the Creator, YE (Kanye West), and Pusha T, and the songs performed at the show, which also featured Teriyaki Boyz, A$AP Rocky, Lil Uzi Vert, and more, will be released in February as "I know NIGO®," NIGO®'s first album in 17 years.

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, who were appointed designers of KENZO from Spring/Summer 2012 and created a boom with the tiger logo, stepped down at the end of the Spring/Summer 2020 season. Their final season featured a spectacular show featuring a performance by Beyoncé's sister, Solange, but their successor, Portuguese designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista, left the house after just two years.
