Simone Rocha presented her Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection on February 19th. Last year, the designer won the British Womenswear Designer of the Year Award and just opened a flagship store in New York this month. This season, this dynamic brand expressed the anger of women living in modern society. It's an anger that has spread to women of all generations and around the world due to political turmoil, but it's not hatred or a sense of despair. Instead of the romantic, girlish approach seen in past collections, which used ruffles and rounded shapes, the collection emphasized military style, using luxurious materials like velvet and fur. The first look was a deep brown trench coat, said to represent a "mud-covered battlefield." Crafted from lavish thick velvet, it featured curved cuts on the collar, sleeves, and waistline, adding a feminine touch. The color palette shifted from khaki to black, gray, and white. Simone Rocha's romanticism was clearly evident in the all-lace coats, outerwear adorned with small floral embroidery, and coats with large faux fur belts. The faux fur stoles held protectively under the arms and the pairing of bejeweled socks and sandals exuded a somewhat childlike attitude.
The red accents in the embroidery and prints expressed peaceful anger. It bloomed beautifully like hope amid the strict and powerful clothing. Crystal flower motifs and a pure white all-lace jacket and skirt adorned the finale. Even in the sweet looks, cross belts around the body hinted at a consistent military element.
The collection, show direction, and the use of models of all ages perfectly expressed Simone Rocha's approach to femininity from every angle. A woman with a strong will is sternly strong, but this is not a masculine strength; it is a strength that comes from protecting what is important. Even if they feel angry, they do not lose hope and are always moving towards peace. The reality may not be so sweet, but let us rejoice now that beautiful armor has been donated to all the women who go into battle.
