Contemporary artist Chris Knight paints Gucci's Flora. Behind-the-scenes video also released

Dec 11, 2014

Painter Kris Knight's solo exhibition "SMELL THE MAGIC" ran from December 2nd to 6th as the opening of Miami Art Fair 2014. Canadian-born Knight's portraits depict a mysterious world on the borders of identity. Taking historical themes such as royalty and mysticism as their theme, Knight's works are inspired by 18th-century portraits of French aristocrats and Polaroid photographs, and are painted using primary and soft pastel colors. Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini, also attended the exhibition's opening reception. For the 2014-15 Fall/Winter Men's Collection, Gucci presented grayish-toned works inspired by Knight's style. The two have continued to collaborate, with Knight painting a portrait of a boy wearing a runway look in October, which Gucci released on T-shirts. Additionally, Knight has created "Flora Night," a unique interpretation of Gucci's signature "Flora" print. It features enchanting flowers like belladonna and datura, complemented by clovers and night cherries, symbols of protection. This motif, combining opposing elements of beauty and enchantment, was incorporated into the 2015 Cruise Collection, appearing on apparel, handbags, and luggage. To coincide with the launch of this Cruise Collection, Gucci has released a short film documenting the behind-the-scenes story of "Flora Night." Knight, who normally paints portraits, was captivated by flowers and how he captured their hidden beauty and enchantment. Understanding this process will deepen the meaning of the "Flora Night" motif.
