One in two people plan to buy a lucky bag in 2014. What are they doing to avoid making mistakes?

Dec 10, 2013

Shufoo!, an electronic flyer portal site operated by Toppan Printing, conducted an online survey of 824 men and women aged 20 to 50 nationwide regarding their attitudes toward purchasing lucky bags. The survey results revealed that approximately one in two people (45.3%) are considering purchasing a lucky bag in January 2014. The percentage of people planning to purchase a lucky bag worth ¥10,000 or more was 32.7%, an increase of approximately 12% from the previous year. The average number of lucky bags planned by those planning to purchase was 1.5, with some even going as far as five. Approximately 70% (72.2%) of respondents have purchased lucky bags in the past. While one in three men have never purchased one, approximately 80% of women have. However, of those respondents, approximately 70% (69.2%) stated that they "often feel that their lucky bag purchases have been a mistake/have felt that they have made a mistake." Some respondents reported, "It was a brand I always buy, but it felt like it was just stuffed with leftovers," and "There were three of the same games in the lucky bag."

To avoid making a mistake, about 60% actually search for information about lucky bags in advance, with about 20% of them doing so "the day before" (8.5%) or "on the day" (10.9%), just before purchasing. The most common search method was "Internet" (29.1%), followed by "in-store announcements" (27.2%) and "flyers" (25.1%), ranking third. More than half (51%) of the younger generation interested in purchasing lucky bags said they would "use it as a reference" if they could check lucky bag information on their cell phones or smartphone apps.
