Dec 16, 2013

Novelist Philip K. Dick was born December 16, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He passed away March 2, 1982. He was one of fraternal twins, but his twin sister died 40 days later. This event influenced his work, relationships, and even his life, leading to the motif of the "phantom twin" appearing in many of his works. He made his full-fledged debut with the 1952 novel "Ubu Lies Heavy," and gained attention with his 1955 novel "The Sun Quiz (Accidental World)." In 1963, he won the Hugo Award for his alternate history science fiction novel "The Man in the High Castle," and was hailed as a genius in the science fiction world. However, he had trouble with his publisher and suffered financial hardship. In 1975, he won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for "Flow My Tears," a novel about a celebrity who awakens in an unknown parallel world. During his lifetime, he wrote 44 novels and 121 short stories, most of which were published in science fiction magazines. However, he remained poor throughout his career, and his works were only adapted into films after his death, achieving success. These include Blade Runner, based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?; Total Recall, a 2012 remake; A Scanner Darkly, starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder; and Minority Report, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise. His style has been described as philosophical fiction disguised as science fiction. A central theme throughout his writing is that "all reality is fiction." His mystical experiences gradually led to a theological orientation. In his later years, he published his masterpiece, the Valis trilogy, consisting of Valis, The Divine Invasion, and The Reincarnation of Timothy Archer.

He suffered a cerebral infarction in 1982 and passed away.
