Film director Ridley Scott was born on November 30, 1937, in South Shields, England. After studying graphic design at West Hartpool School of Art and the Royal College of Art, he joined the British public broadcaster BBC. He gained experience directing television dramas before retiring. He founded the commercial film production company RSA with his brother Tony. The innovative commercials he directed there won numerous awards, leading to his entry into the film industry. His debut film, The Duelist, won the Best New Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977, and his 1979 hit Alien garnered worldwide attention. After moving to Hollywood, he made a name for himself in science fiction with Blade Runner (1982), an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
He has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for three films: "Thelma & Louise" in 1991, "Gladiator" in 2000, and "Black Hawk Down" in 2001, but has not won. His latest work is "Counselor," which brings together a star-studded cast including Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz. The film's costumes are provided by "Giorgio Armani" and "Versace."
