21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, located in Roppongi, Tokyo, opened "Gallery 3" on March 31st, a new base of operations following the previous "Gallery 1" and "Gallery 2." A press conference and reception were held on the 30th, prior to the public opening. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT opened in March 2007 as a space for considering various events and ideas through design, communicating them to the world, and making proposals. Since its inaugural exhibition, "Tadao Ando's 2006 Construction Site: A Hard-fought Struggles," and its inaugural exhibition, "Chocolate," the museum has hosted 34 exhibitions, including "REALITY LAB - Regeneration and Creation," "Tohoku's Strength, Heart, and Light: 'Clothing' by Issey Miyake," "Temahima: Food and Living in Tohoku," "Image Makers," "Architect Frank Gehry," and the currently ongoing "Athletes" exhibition, attracting over 1.5 million visitors. Adjacent to Gallery 1 and Gallery 2, Gallery 3 was opened to further develop 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT's activities on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. Its 110-square-meter space, with a 4.3-meter ceiling, is open to the public and will collaborate with companies and design professionals from around the world, as well as educational and research institutions and cultural organizations, to host exhibitions, events, workshops, and other experimental programs. In April, as part of the opening project, a talk event series called "Open Conversations" will be held, in which participants will consider the future of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, based on the 10th anniversary activities. At the reception, Issey Miyake said, "In terms of design, which is appreciated over the years, it has only been 10 years. However, what was once thought to be impossible has become a reality thanks to the wonderful people around me, such as the Asahi Shimbun, which published an article about my 2003 article, 'Let's Build a Design Museum.' I believe the most important thing is human emotion, and the wild spirit." "I thought it would close in two or three years," said Tadao Ando, drawing laughter from the audience. "The reason we've been able to continue this far is because everyone's passion is connected. I want to continue doing what I can as a hub for design and culture." Yasuhiro Nakamura, president of Tokyo Midtown Management, said, "The past 10 years have far exceeded our expectations. I want Tokyo Midtown, along with 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, to improve with age rather than deteriorate with time." Taku Sato, who assumed the position of director on the occasion of the museum's 10th anniversary, said, "Looking back, I think that was Issei's aim to create something completely new. We started with no one with curatorial experience, and we continued to experiment and explore the possibilities of design. We will continue to carry the passion of our great predecessors (such as Isamu Noguchi, Ikko Tanaka, and Shiro Kuramata) into the future, asking what design is and what it can do, proposing things that have never been seen before, and blazing a new trail."
Furthermore, after the greetings, a special performance was held by dancer and choreographer Moriyama Kaiji, who used the inside and outside of Gallery 3 to present a performance that seemed to combine the power of the Jomon period with the energy of Africa.
