Vivienne Westwood designed and created the costumes for the Vienna State Ballet for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's annual New Year's Concert. The concert will be broadcast worldwide on the BBC on January 1, 2014. The Vienna State Ballet's performance will be screened on video and played during intermissions as part of the concert program. The main piece will be the Strauss Family Waltz. This year's conductor will be Daniel Barenboim, marking his second visit to the company. Seiji Ozawa conducted in 2002. Kathrin Menzinger and Vadim Garvuzoy will dance "Donauwalzer" (The Blue Danube) in the live performance. Menzinger will wear the "Moon" silk taffeta dress, a subtle adaptation of the monochrome "Absense of Rose" print from the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Spring/Summer 2014 collection. To add a touch of femininity, the dress features sleeves embroidered with white lace and lilac chenière thread, and a wreath of white tulle roses adorns her hair. Garvuzoy wears a double-breasted monkey jacket with a traditional tailcoat. The pants of the black uniform are cut 4cm and complemented with a traditional black silk cummerbund.
In the first waltz, the male dancer appears in a midnight blue matte and satin tailcoat jacket with white and black lapels. He also accessorizes with a cummerbund, dance tights, and satin dress slippers.
The female dancers' costumes are characterized by a play of color and luxurious materials. The first dancer wears a deep burgundy dress with a bow and tulle hemline, called Vivienne Westwood's "Bird of Paradise." The second dancer wears a golden yellow dress inspired by the "Ultra Feminity" collection released in Spring/Summer 2005. The third dancer wears the "Bronze SOL" dress, featuring a greenish checked and striped taffeta bodice, pale gray skirt, and white tulle underneath. The fourth dancer wears the beautifully layered "Paperbag Frill" long dress overlaid with fine cream lace, long lace gloves, and peach-colored satin slippers. The fifth dancer wears a ballroom skirt based on the theme of a "Corset Lady," featuring multiple layers of gold and pale bronze lace and tulle.
The second act features a polka. Here, costumes crafted from traditional Scottish tartan, a fabric representative of Vivienne Westwood, are featured. The female dancer wears a short kilt with a tulle skirt. Tartan is featured on the bustier, silk taffeta blouse and bow tie, thigh-high socks and garter belt, as well as the iconic Dombar jacket. The men's costume is a striking blue tartan kilt paired with a traditional Scottish tartan gilet and shirt, and they also carry a pochette.
