Barcelona-based visual artist Aleix Gordo Hostau and artist Tadaomi Shibuya are collaborating on a collaborative exhibition titled "Japanese-Western Eccentricity" at Midori-so, a shared office space in Meguro. The exhibition runs until December 3rd. As the exhibition name suggests, it attempts a blend of East and West. A large Tengu (long-nosed goblin) by Gordo and a powerful Buddha by Shibuya, painted in black, stand face to face on the white wall of the exhibition space. Gordo was heavily influenced by the Japanese anime he watched as a child, and this mural painting features motifs from 1970s anime alongside a "Western" Tengu seen from a Japanese perspective. Meanwhile, Shibuya's linear style of "Eastern" Buddhas is a style primarily accepted in the Western market. The themes and styles intertwine to create a "Japanese-Western eccentricity."
This collaboration was planned by Bruce Ikeda of JKD Collective, an artist collective that creates audio-visual works and has an office in Midori-so.
Ikeda said, "We plan to continue developing this collaboration. In addition to creating publications, we also plan to auction off some of the mural art. If possible, we would like to exhibit it in Barcelona, where Gaud is based."
A live painting session took place on the first day, November 29th, attracting a large audience. In addition to the paintings, each artist's individual works were also on display and for sale.
