A solo exhibition of Masayoshi Nakajo, a leading Japanese graphic designer, will be held.

Jan 17, 2013

"@btf," an event space in Kachidoki, Tokyo, is hosting a solo exhibition by leading Japanese graphic designer Masayoshi Nakajo, titled "Nakajo's First Half." For this exhibition, Nakajo Design Office has reorganized all of its works from 1973 through to its most recent work, spanning 40 years. Approximately 380 pieces, ranging from posters to the "Hanatsubaki" magazine, will be on display. Born in Tokyo in 1933, Nakajo graduated from the Department of Design at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1956. After working in Shiseido's advertising department and at Deska, he founded the Nakajo Design Office in 1961. His major work includes the art direction and design of Shiseido's "Hanatsubaki" magazine, which he worked on for over 40 years, the art direction and design of The Ginza/Tactics Design, and the logotype and packaging design for Shiseido Parlour.

"Graphic design is still in the age of Newton. The Einstein of graphic design has yet to appear. There is no sign of anything new. I can't die until it does," murmurs Nakajo, and you can enjoy the "first half" of his work.

It's disrespectful to the gallery, but I plan to divide the large venue into two sections, IN and OUT, and throw one half in Harumi's trash, filled with immaturity, youthful foibles, and other poor works. It's painful to even look back on myself, so I'm not sure whether it's right to show it to other people, but please laugh at "the first half of Nakajo." (Nakajo Masayoshi)
