An exhibition of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the artist-husband and wife known for their large-scale outdoor environmental art, will be held at Tabloid Gallery from December 10th to December 21st.
The exhibition will feature drawings and collages created by Christo during the conception and preparation stages of their work, as well as photographic documentation of the duo's work, showcasing projects from their early days to their current one.
Christo was born in Bulgaria in 1935. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia under the Communist regime. While studying in Prague, he was inspired by the groundbreaking works of Picasso and Miro, and moved to Paris in search of freedom of expression. He met Jeanne-Claude (who died in 2009), born in Morocco in the same year to French parents, and began collaborating with her. His early works, such as "Drum Stacks and Packages on a Dock" (1961), which utilized drums and cargo stored in the port of Cologne, and "Drum Wall = Iron Curtain" (1962), which blocked off a road in Paris with a wall of drums, served as the starting point for his subsequent large-scale projects. His most notable works include "Surrounded Islands, Project for Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida" (1982), set in a bay dotted with 11 small islands; "Umbrella" (1991), a six-meter-tall structure featuring a total of 3,100 umbrellas set in Japan and the United States; and "Gates" (2005), which consisted of over 7,500 umbrellas installed in New York's Central Park. Each of these works required years of work and enormous financial investment, including permitting and technical and logistical preparation, from conception to realization. They have astonished people around the world.
The theme of the Jean Paul Gaultier 02-03 AW collection is their work.
