The first solo exhibition in Japan by Christian Bonnefoi, one of France's leading artists, will be held at Maison Hermès Forum in Ginza from the 13th of next month. This mini-retrospective exhibition will showcase Bonnefoi's signature works, from recurring works such as "Babel," "Eureka," and "Back" to his new work, "Constellations of the Zodiac Above Ginza." The exhibition was designed by young architect Hideyuki Nakayama. The Forum's space will be lightly reconfigured with white walls, exploring new appeals in his work. Bonnefoi was born in Salander, France in 1948. He began his career as an art historian, but was inspired by the relief sculpture "Dos" (Back) he encountered at a Henri Matisse exhibition held at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1970, and decided to become a painter. Influenced by the French artistic movement "Support/Surpass" that emerged in the late 1960s, he focuses on the material aspects of painting, aiming to create free-standing objects using transparent materials. He has held large-scale solo exhibitions at the Pompidou Centre and the Matisse Museum, among others.
