"Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum Collection: Intricate Beauty! Meiji Ceramics - The Legendary Kyoto Satsuma" will be held at the Eki Kyoto Museum of Art from January 2nd to 31st, 2016. Kyo-Satsuma refers to pottery that was once produced in Kyoto for only a few decades. It descends from Hon-Satsuma, a style made in Kagoshima that gained popularity overseas, and was the Meiji government's flagship export product. With the cooperation of the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum of Art, one of Japan's leading collectors of Satsuma ware, this exhibition will bring together a collection of Satsuma ware, showcasing the history of Kyo-Satsuma ware and its manufacturing and painting processes through panels and actual objects. Most of the Kyo-Satsuma ware, including the works in this exhibition, were originally made for export and were repurchased from overseas, making this a rare opportunity to see them all together in one place. The exhibits include a "Flower and Butterfly Design Flower Plate," a "Flower and Bird Design Vase," a "Chrysanthemum Arabesque Design Tea Set," a "Ring Design Tea Bowl," and a "Pair of Crane, Flower and Figure Design Vases." Additionally, there will be gallery talks on January 9th, 2016 featuring Murata Masayoshi, director of the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum, and on January 16th, 2016, featuring Matsubara Fumi, special researcher at the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum. The talks will be held at 11am and 2pm on each day, lasting approximately 30 minutes.
