Mario and Luigi become "Wind Gods and Thunder Gods"!? Exhibition by two leading Rinpa artists

Aug 25, 2015

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Rinpa school, which was founded by Hon'ami Koetsu and Tawaraya Sotatsu during the Momoyama period, an exhibition titled "Rinpa 400th Anniversary: The Path from Rinpa: The Work of Kamisaka Sekka and Yamamoto Taro" will be held from October 23rd to November 29th at the "Eki" Kyoto Museum, located adjacent to the 7th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan. This exhibition, held in the year of the Rinpa 400th anniversary, introduces two Rinpa artists: Kamisaka Sekka, who inherited the Rinpa style in modern times and revived Rinpa art in Kyoto, and Yamamoto Taro, who continues the aspirations and designs of his predecessors in the present day. Kamisaka Sekka and Yamamoto Taro have produced unexpected and humorous works while adhering to the approachable, elegant, and traditional techniques of the Rinpa school. The exhibition will feature approximately 100 works by the two artists, including folding screens, scrolls, and crafts. Through their work, visitors can experience the path of Rinpa, flowing from the past to the present and into the future. One particularly noteworthy piece is Taro Yamamoto's latest work, "Mario & Luigi Folding Screen," created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the birth of Super Mario. This first-time public showing of the work depicts Mario and Luigi as the wind gods and thunder gods. Other works on display include Taro Yamamoto's "Red and White Plum Blossoms Folding Screen" and "Traffic Light at Suminoe," as well as Kamisaka Sekka's "Flowers and Plants." A "Red Raku Tea Bowl" by Kamisaka Sekka will also be on display.
