Eating an egg sandwich in Kyoto.
It's become something of a trend among Kyoto travelers these days. In search of the ultimate breakfast egg sandwich, I visited Yamamoto Kissa, a cafe with a retro look along Shirakawa Street in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto Prefecture.
When I entered the cafe at 10:00 AM, I was greeted by the delicious aroma of coffee and the sight of local customers chatting away. Standing at the counter were the owner, Daiki Yamamoto, and his wife, Akiko. The young couple opened the cafe five years ago. I was shown to a table and ordered the ever-popular "Fluffy Fried Egg Sandwich Set" (780 yen). While waiting for my sandwich to be prepared, I enjoyed the sunlight streaming in through the window, the sound of customers reading newspapers, the rattle of the pot, and the sound of happy conversation.
And then, I finally got my hands on the egg sandwich! The egg sandwich features a smooth, finely textured omelette about 2cm thick, thinly sliced cucumber, and is sandwiched between moist, fresh bread. Just holding it conveys its fluffy texture. Trying it immediately, I was instantly captivated by its sheer fluffyness. The simple umami of the egg and the flavor of the mustard mayonnaise spread throughout my mouth in perfect balance. The combination of the fluffy omelette, moist bread, and crisp cucumber creates a three-way texture that's sure to become addictive. I was told that the omelette uses two eggs and is cooked slowly over low heat, stirring constantly. Each omelette is carefully prepared to order and is truly delicious. The breakfast and set menu coffee, brewed by the chef, pair perfectly with the egg sandwich. Before I knew it, conversation naturally began with the customers sitting at the counter. An older woman told me, "I come here every day." I'm sure it's the warm personalities of Mr. and Mrs. Yamamoto that create the atmosphere of the shop that makes you want to come back every day. And I still can't forget the delicious egg sandwich, so I'll definitely be back.
