Isetan Shinjuku Main Store will host an event on the first floor of the main building, The Stage, from January 3rd to 5th, 2016, showcasing a collaboration between bonsai and modern interior design, showcasing Japanese culture as a new value. The event, titled "Appreciating Bonsai: The Evolution of Japanese Interior Decor," is a collaboration between Kato Manseien, a bonsai farm with a history dating back to the Edo period; TIME & STYLE, a company specializing in modern interior furniture; and Isetan Shinjuku. The event showcases a "new Japanese interior decor" born from the fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics and interior space. Kato Manseien, a long-established bonsai business with over 160 years of history and five generations of management, is a renowned bonsai family located in the former Omiya district of Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture, also known as Bonsai Town. This time, bonsai will be reinterpreted as a "BONSAI" interior item, creating a space coordinated with Time & Style interiors to harmonize with modern lifestyles.
Contemporary art will be displayed as "hanging scrolls" at the venue. Next to Kato Manseien's "Japanese White Pine" (¥3,240,000 including tax), Enomoto Yuichi's "Flowers" (¥583,200 including tax) will be displayed as a "hanging scroll." In addition, the store will also feature the "Shimpaku" (¥1,836,000 including tax), a bonsai that complements modern spaces.
During the exhibition, Takatoshi Kato, the fifth generation owner of Kato Manseien, will provide explanations to visitors to deepen their understanding of BONSAI and Japanese room etiquette. There will also be a live session featuring the powerful yet beautiful sound of the shakuhachi and guitar (January 4th and 5th). A buyer from Mitsukoshi Isetan said, "I think the significance of this event is not just to introduce the good things about Japan, but to add a new interpretation of the times, allowing people to rediscover the traditions and culture that Japan is proud of around the world, and to communicate them as 'new value.' While cherishing the spirit of learning from the past, we would like to propose new ideas for the shape and beauty of BONSAI of the future, in a way that harmonizes with modern lifestyles."
