Relaxing bath time in the living room: A visit to Bijuu, a special hotel that only accepts two guests per day [Kyoto Trip]

Jan 2, 2016

Located in Kyoto's Shijo area, Bijuu Hotel is a hidden gem offering panoramic views of Higashiyama and the Kamo River. It was opened in 2014 by Murakamiju Honten, a 180-year-old Kyoto pickle maker. The name Bijuu embodies the idea of "layering beauty" in various ways, including beauty, fine art, cultural beauty, and fine cuisine. We'd like to introduce you to a special room that only two groups can stay in per day. First up is Suite Room 501, which occupies the entire fifth floor. The first thing that catches your eye upon entering the room is the open-plan bathtub made of rusted stone in the center of the living room. Separated by glass, the spacious bedroom continues on the other side. The room also comes equipped with a bedrock bath large enough for two people to lounge in, making this a 114-square-meter studio room filled with luxurious amenities and space. The interior, renovated by Teruhiro Yanagihara, a designer whose work spans a wide range of fields from architecture to Arita ware design, is based on the concept of "layering beauty," preserving the original materials while incorporating modern materials like wood, brick, and stone. The room also boasts a wine cellar stocked with organic wines, seasonal flower arrangements, an aroma pot filled with the scent of an original blend, and Arita ware tableware crafted by Yanagihara, showcasing meticulous attention to detail in every corner. The luxurious space is so comfortable you'll want to spend all day in it. Room 301, a Deluxe Room, is fully equipped with a system kitchen and is an apartment-style room ideal for long-term stays or families. The warm plaster walls and wood accents create a relaxing atmosphere. The bathroom also features a bathtub designed for reclining. Floating in a shallow, two-meter-deep bathtub is said to enhance relaxation. Both rooms include a Japanese breakfast featuring seasonal pickles from Murakamiju Honten. Guests can also request Western or vegan breakfasts. The hotel's director, Reina Gentsu, studied abroad in Paris after graduating from university and then moved there. She worked in the fashion industry. Through various connections, she transitioned from the fashion industry to the hospitality industry. "None of Bijuu's staff have experience in the hospitality industry. That's why we strive to create a comfortable space that reflects our customers' perspectives," says Gentsu. Bijuu's original pajamas are made from Master Seed Cotton, the finest cotton with a silky luster and texture. Her experience in the fashion industry is reflected in the attention to detail in the rooms' designs and colors, which is likely why they are so popular with guests both in Japan and abroad.
