A writer living in Kyoto recommends modern stationery from Uragu and "Yuki Konko" pressed items from Kameya Yoshinaga [Winter souvenirs]

Dec 28, 2015

The year-end and New Year holidays are a time when many people bring gifts, such as seasonal greetings and returning home. FASHION HEADLINE presents "winter gifts" selected by fashion and beauty industry professionals. If you're having trouble deciding what to give, check out this list of top gifts endorsed by these discerning connoisseurs.

This time, we asked Kyoto-based writer and FASHION HEADLINE contributor, Asae Gun, for her recommended gifts. Gun knows Kyoto's most stylish spots inside and out. We've greedily chosen to introduce gifts from two stores.

■ Stationery from Kyoto's "Uragu"
Uragu, a Kyoto graphic designer, offers beautiful modern stationery items created with the theme of handwriting, not email. "I would like to give these to people with good taste, regardless of gender, as a way to express my gratitude and seasonal greetings," says Gun.

This time, we'll introduce "Mamemo" (350 yen), a popular item from their wide selection of stationery. This beautifully designed product is a small memo pad with 200 sheets. It can be used for various purposes, such as writing notes or small letter paper. We recommend it as a small gift.

In addition to stationery, the store also sells textiles and ceramics. If you're in Kyoto, be sure to stop by the Uragu store. You might find a special Kyoto souvenir. *New Year's holiday hours are listed on the official website (www.uragu.com).

■Kameya Yoshinaga Pressed Objects
Kuni-san actually gave us a gift for our editorial department: Kameya Yoshinaga's pressed wasanbon sugar "Reki Yuki Konko" (810 yen). Immediately after receiving it, Gun-san exclaimed, "Open the box!" Inside, pressed objects shaped like snowmen and snowflakes were arranged in a charming way, as if a story were being told within the box. We couldn't help but exclaim, "So cute!"

This shop is a prestigious Japanese confectionery store that was founded in 1812 and specializes in Kyoto sweets. Preserving the traditional Japanese aesthetic, the refined Japanese sweets are so beautiful they could be called works of art. The "Calendar" introduced this time, as its name suggests, changes design depending on the season and the calendar. "Yuki Konko" will be on sale until January 10th, 2016, and the next "Calendar" will be released with a "Zuisho" design, perfect for the New Year. When you open the box, you will see wasanbon sugar shaped like pine, bamboo, and plum. It will be a heartfelt gift that wishes for a wonderful year. *Opening hours for the New Year holidays are listed on the official website (kameya-yoshinaga.com).
