The "Beginning, a Feast of Beauty: The Magnificent Ohara Museum of Art Collection," which brings together works from the Ohara Museum of Art's collection, will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo from January 20 to April 4, 2016.
The Ohara Museum of Art is Japan's first full-scale art museum dedicated to Western art, founded in 1930 by Ohara Magosaburo, a major businessman from Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, who was also active in the fields of social contribution and welfare. The exhibition will showcase representative works from the Ohara Museum of Art's collection, while also introducing the museum's activities spanning nearly a century. The exhibition will feature works by artists associated with the Mingei (folk art) movement, including El Greco's "The Annunciation," Claude Monet's "Water Lilies," Pablo Picasso's "Still Life with a Skull," Amedeo Modigliani's "Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne," Giorgio de Chirico's "The Farewell of Hector and Andromache," and Paul Gauguin's "Fragrant Earth." Other works on display include "Seated White Jade Maitreya Buddha," "Statue of the Goddess Isis or Nephthys," "Dancing Girl" by Ryusei Kishida, who died at the young age of 38, and "Belgian Girl in Kimono" by Torajiro Kojima, who laid the foundation for the Ohara Museum of Art. Additionally, Naoki Matayoshi of the Akutagawa Prize-winning comedy duo Peace has been appointed as a supporter of the exhibition. The highlights and ways to enjoy the exhibition will be introduced in Matayoshi's unique style through various opportunities, including an exhibition movie. The original movie, which consists of 10 episodes and features a mystery-solving story, is currently available on the exhibition website and YouTube.
