A large-scale exhibition featuring Takashi Murakami's contemporary art collection, "Takashi Murakami's Superflat Collection—From Shohaku and Rosanjin to Kiefer," will be held at the Yokohama Museum of Art from January 30 to April 3, 2016. Murakami is a contemporary artist whose artistic practice, based on the concept of "Superflat," is not limited to formal concepts such as flatness and decorativeness, but rather refers to the parallelism of individual works, free from era, genre, and existing hierarchies, and transcends frameworks. He has brought a new concept to the global art world. In addition to his energetic creative endeavors, he also works as a curator, gallerist, and producer. This exhibition will feature approximately 400 works from Murakami's collection of over 5,000 pieces, carefully selected and collected by Murakami himself based on his own unique values. Rather than dividing the works into established categories such as region or school, the exhibition will explore the meaning of the "Superflat Collection" by juxtaposing them in a sensory or mechanical manner. The "Inside Murakami's Mind" section features a chaotic display of graffiti paintings, antique furniture, ceramic beer mugs, and pétanque balls, creating a mysterious experience that feels like a glimpse into Murakami's mind. The Grand Gallery in the "Sculpture Garden" section features large sculptures and installations, including works by Anselm Kiefer and Yoshitomo Nara. The "Japan, Use, and Beauty" section, featuring Japanese and other Oriental ceramics, modern pottery, Edo-period calligraphy, paintings, and documents, traces Murakami's exploration of the origins of beauty through the works of Kitaoji Rosanjin and Soga Shohaku. The "1950-2015" section showcases key pieces from Murakami's collection, both Japanese and international, spanning from the 1950s to the present. Works by Andy Warhol, Nobuyoshi Araki, Kishin Shinoyama, Horst Janssen, Damien Hirst, Friedrich Kunath, and Naoya Hatakeyama are displayed roughly chronologically.
Other interactive works and video installations in the "Study Room & Factory" section encourage visitors to consider the creation and establishment of value, labor and compensation, and more.
