"Kyoto International Photography Festival 2016" - Looking back at 100 years of fashion history through Condé Nast archive photos

Jan 22, 2016

KYOTOGRAPHIE 2016, one of Japan's few international photography festivals, will be held from April 23rd at over 10 venues in Kyoto City, including the normally closed Kondaya Genbei Kurogura and Ryosokuin, a sub-temple of Kenninji Temple. The fourth edition, held in 2016, will be themed around "Circle of Life," and will feature a variety of programs, including exhibitions of new works by cutting-edge artists and rare collections, some of which will be shown in Japan for the first time, as well as related events and workshops. "Coming into Fashion - 100 Years of Fashion Photography by Condé Nast presented by CHANEL NEXUS HALL" will bring together works by photographers such as Edward Steichen, John Rawlings, William Klein, and Helmut Newton. The exhibition will feature archive works from Condé Nast, which has been producing masterpieces of fashion photography for over 100 years through magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair.

Also featured will be Chris Jordan's series "Midway: Messages from the Gyre," which depicts piles of plastic bottle caps on the carcass of a baby albatross that was mistaken for food after being fed by its parents after washing up on the Midway Islands. The exhibition will also feature an installation of lamps made by designer Jurgen Lehl, who passed away in 2014, that incorporate messages from plastic waste that washed up on the beach.

Other works on display include Sarah Moon's new work "Alchemies," which garnered attention at her solo exhibition held at the Natural History Museum in Paris in 2013; Christian Sardet's latest work capturing the beauty of plankton; works shot in Kyoto by Arno Raphael Minkkinen, who was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2015; and works by Koga Eriko and Thierry Bouette.

The festival will also feature weekend guided tours of several exhibitions, talk events, classes to learn photography, stamp rallies and workshops that children can enjoy.
