■ "North American Mammals" by Sean Landers
Sean Landers is an artist born in Massachusetts in 1962 and currently based in New York.
This book features many new works by Landers inspired by René Magritte's "Period of Vache" paintings from the 1940s, a period characterized by figures referencing cartoons and caricatures, intense brushstrokes, and garish colors.
These new works borrow the tartan pattern frequently used by Magritte from the same period, inlaying it onto North American animals such as bears, foxes, and rabbits.
Magritte's "Time of Vache" paintings sold none when they were first released, received negative reviews from his wife, and were shelved during his lifetime. Landers continues to create works inspired by his interest in the permanence of painting and how painting can become an extension of the artist's self, asking, "What does it mean to be an artist when all that remains of an artist is their work? How can they remain meaningful in the future?" This book offers a detailed look at this new work.
