A collection of adorable pattern designs by Keisuke Serizawa, a Living National Treasure of Stencil Dyeing [NADiff Recommended Book]

Jan 21, 2016

Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each store of the art bookstore "NADiff" will introduce a book they recommend. This time, we will be introducing the Shibuya branch of NADiff modern (Bunkamura, 1F, 2-24-1 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

■ "Serizawa Keisuke Pattern Illustrated Book" by Serizawa Keisuke (Kei is the character for "Kei" with a gold radical and a "Kei" character; the rest is omitted)

Serizawa Keisuke is a dyer known as a Living National Treasure of stencil dyeing (katazome). After encountering his lifelong mentor, Yanagi Soetsu, and the Okinawan dyeing technique of bingata, he began his career in dyeing, focusing on stencil dyeing.

He has consistently handled every step of the stencil dyeing process, elevating the work to a creative level. Serizawa's patterns seem to directly reflect what he saw, felt, and thought about every day: letters, plants, people, and landscapes. Originally aspiring to be an artist, his artistic talent was recognized from a young age. He continued to sketch plants and still lifes throughout his life, and his meticulous work can be seen in the intricate details of his patterns.

This book features numerous illustrations of patterns shaped through his creative eye, and also explores his everyday life, which embodies the "beauty of life." Serizawa was a rare figure who took his work so seriously and tolerated no imperfections. Here, we see an artist who boasts high quality and perfection, regardless of the size of his patterns.

NADiff Modern is holding a "Handicraft Fair" until January 31st, showcasing books on "Mingei" (folk art) and tenugui (handmade cloth) and furoshiki (wrapping cloth) designs by Serizawa Keisuke.
