■ TOO MUCH Magazine Issue 7: The Himarayas Naoki Ishikawa
TOO MUCH Magazine is an independent magazine based in Tokyo, published twice a year. This seventh issue focuses on the theme of "WORK," and features photographer and adventurer Naoki Ishikawa. His Himalayan mountaineering career began in 2001 when he became the youngest person to successfully summit Mount Everest. Ten years later, starting in 2011, he successfully summited several 8,000-meter peaks in the Himalayas, and in the summer of 2015, he attempted to summit K2, the world's second-most difficult peak in the Karakoram mountain range, bordering Pakistan, China, and India.
This book explores what Himalayan mountaineering is like through photographs and diaries he recorded between 2011 and 2015. His photographs capture the natural landscape, seemingly refusing to let civilization invade, and the people who "belong" to it, or "come alongside" it, rather than "challenging" it. Despite the brutal environment, the unexpectedly relaxed expressions on the faces of the people in his photographs and the detailed descriptions of his climbs in his diary convey a more realistic portrayal of his work. This unique book, combining beautiful photographs with the perspective of "work," presents a different side to his work.
To celebrate the publication of this book, Nadiff Duchamp is holding a fair until January 24th where they are selling original visual works (limited to 100 copies) in which TOO MUCH Magazine has added designs to digital photographs taken by Ishikawa Naoki at K2 this summer, as well as an exhibition of the tools actually used during the Himalayan expedition.
