Flower artist Junichi Kakizaki was born on January 4, 1971, in Nagano Prefecture.
His parents ran a flower shop. He began studying under flower artist Muneyoshi Tsuchiya while in high school. He then studied design and crafts at Yoyogi Art School and horticulture and floral design at Techno-Horti Horticultural College.
In 1993, he moved to Shizuoka City and studied under flower designer Fumihiko Muramatsu. For several years, beginning in 1995, he worked on stage design for artists such as Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno. In 2001, he formed the floral artist collective "LEAF" with Shogo Kariyazaki and others, and the following year, he attracted attention by forming a "flower and dance" collaboration with dancer Richard Hart.
In 2003, he held his first overseas performance and solo exhibition in Sweden. Furthermore, in 2005, he collaborated with Sweden's SU-EN Butoh Company to create a piece for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' "Japan-EU People-to-People Exchange Year," and in 2007 he was involved in the stage design for Sweden's national project, "The 300th Anniversary of the Birth of Linnaeus."

In 2011, in collaboration with the artist collective Chim↑Pom, he collected plants and "tsunami debris" from around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and used them to create the sculptural series "Irradiated Flowers," which attracted a lot of attention.
