Aya Ito's "Teru-chan's Delusional Tragedy" exhibition held at Ikejiri CAPSULE

Jan 16, 2014

Young artist Aya Ito's solo exhibition "Teru-chan's Delusional Tragedy" will be held at CAPSULE in Ikejiri, Tokyo, from January 18th through February 9th.

The exhibition features works created through a unique creative process that Ito calls "photo-drawing." Photo-drawing is a technique in which Ito photographs hundreds of maquettes made from objects, drawings, photographs, and fabrics from various angles and framings, and then examines the visual effect before transforming the real world captured in the photographs into realistic paintings.

The exhibition will feature 10 ceramic sculptures fired in an anagama kiln, where temperature and natural glaze application are difficult to control, five new oil paintings, and five ceramic panel works that combine multiple photo-drawings and then paint them with glaze.

Aya Ito was born in Arita City, Wakayama Prefecture in 1987. He graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, majoring in oil painting, in 2009 and completed the university's Graduate School of Fine Arts, majoring in painting, in 2011. While studying there, he also participated in an exchange program at the Royal College of Art in the UK. He is currently based in Wakayama and his artistic activities have been recognized with awards such as the Suntory Prize at Art Camp in Kunst-Bau 2007, the runner-up prize at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2009, the Mayor's Award at the Graduate School at the 2010 Kyoto City University of Arts Exhibition, and the Shu Uemura Award and Yuko Hasegawa Award at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2011.
